ANCEL HD120 Heavy Duty Truck Scanner Bluetooth DPF Regen Tool for Volvo & Intl
HD120 Heavy Duty Truck Scanner – Detailed Technical Explanation of Common Issues
The HD120 Bluetooth Heavy Duty Truck Scanner is designed to deliver reliable diagnostics for a wide range of heavy-duty vehicles. While the device supports advanced features such as fault code reading, DPF regeneration, and communication with various ECUs, some users may encounter limitations during usage. Below is a comprehensive explanation of three commonly reported issues, why they occur, and how users can effectively address them.
1. Error Codes Cannot Be Cleared
If you're unable to clear error codes from your truck using the HD120 scanner, it's important to understand that this behavior is often caused by how modern truck ECUs manage fault data. The scanner is functioning correctly, but the system may restrict code clearance under specific conditions.
Possible Causes:
-
Unresolved Faults: Active fault codes cannot be cleared unless the underlying issue has been resolved. For instance, a failed sensor, wiring fault, or defective component must be replaced or repaired before the ECU allows the code to be erased.
-
Historical or Permanent Codes: Some codes, especially those stored for record-keeping (historical or permanent codes), are retained by the ECU even after the issue is fixed. These cannot be cleared manually in many vehicle models and are cleared only after multiple successful drive cycles.
-
Aftertreatment System Codes: Faults related to emission systems such as the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), or Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) systems may require specific vehicle operation conditions to be met before they disappear. Simply clearing the code does not immediately reset the system.
Resolution:
-
Repair all active issues associated with the fault code.
-
Drive or idle the vehicle according to manufacturer-recommended cycles for aftertreatment codes to clear automatically.
-
Retry code clearance once the fault conditions are resolved and confirmed.
2. DPF Forced Regeneration Not Performing or Unavailable
The HD120 supports DPF forced regeneration only on specific engine types and under particular operating conditions. If regeneration cannot be initiated, it does not necessarily mean the scanner is defective. Instead, it’s usually due to system requirements or compatibility limitations.
Important Conditions:
-
DPF System Presence: Not all trucks are equipped with a Diesel Particulate Filter system. Verify that your vehicle actually has a DPF before attempting this function.
-
Supported Engine Types: The HD120 currently supports DPF regeneration on engines such as:
-
Volvo
-
Maxxforce
-
International A26
If your truck has a different engine, regeneration may not be supported.
-
-
Preconditions Must Be Met: Even on supported engines, the truck must meet specific conditions to initiate forced regeneration. These may include:
-
Minimum coolant temperature
-
Adequate fuel level
-
Vehicle in park or neutral
-
No active critical fault codes
-
-
Failed Regen Attempts: If the function fails despite meeting all conditions, further investigation may be needed. Using the Diesel OBD function, users can retrieve the Engine ID (ECU ID) to assist technical support in verifying compatibility or identifying firmware limitations.
Resolution:
-
Confirm DPF system is installed.
-
Check engine type for compatibility.
-
Ensure all operating conditions are met before retrying regeneration.
-
Collect engine ECU ID via the Diesel OBD menu and provide it to support if regen continues to fail.
3. Communication Error with Engine ECU
If the scanner cannot establish communication with the Engine Control Unit (ECU), it may be due to issues with the vehicle’s network, the physical connection, or Bluetooth settings.
Troubleshooting Steps:
-
Truck Network Integrity: Ensure the truck’s data bus (CAN, J1939, J1708, etc.) is functioning correctly. Communication faults may originate from damaged wiring, corroded connectors, or failed control modules.
-
Secure Physical Connection: Check that the HD120 scanner is firmly connected to the diagnostic port. A loose connection can prevent successful communication.
-
Bluetooth Setup: Verify that the scanner is properly paired with your phone and that the official app is installed and running. Close other diagnostic apps that may interfere with communication.
-
Restart Procedures: After a failed connection attempt, follow these steps:
-
Turn off the truck’s ignition completely.
-
Wait for 2–3 minutes to reset all modules.
-
Power the vehicle back on and retry the connection.
-
Resolution:
-
Ensure all cables and ports are clean, secure, and undamaged.
-
Restart the system and attempt to connect again using the correct app and settings.
-
If issues persist, try connecting the HD120 to a different vehicle to determine if the problem lies with the truck or the scanner.

D.P.F Regeneration ( Fit for Volvo & International )
D.P.F Regeneration is used to clear PM (Particulate Matter) from the D.P.F filter through continuous combustion oxidation mode (such us high temperature heating conbustion, fuel additive or catalyst reduce PM ignition conbustion) to stabilize the filter perfornance. An unmaintained D.P.F runs your vehicles unnecessarily hard and less efficient. With regular D.P.F maintenance, you can save lots of dollars and time by getting your D.P.F cleaned, restore your D.P.F to nearly new! Increased Fuel Economy up to 5%. Avoid costly replacement of the filters. Lower Overall Maintenance Costs.
D.P.F regeneration may be performed in the following cases:
(a) The exhaust back pressure sensor is replaced.
(b) The PM trap is removed or replaced.
(c) The fuel additive nozzle is removed or replaced.
(d) The cataytic oxidizer is removed or replaced.
(e) The D.P.F regeneration MIL is on and maintenance is performed.
(f) The D.P.F regeneration control module is replaced.
